Register Your Trade Name in Alabama
Registering a DBA in Alabama
Any company that wishes to do business in Alabama under a name other than its registered company name must register a so-called “trade name” (an equivalent of DBA or “doing business as”). Trade names are registered in the similar fashion to registration of trade marks and service marks.
In Alabama, applications to register a trade name are filed with the Lands & Trademarks Department of Alabama Secretary of State. The effective term for mark registrations is five years. Trade names may be renewed by submitting an application for renewal, one copy of application and the renewal fee. If the owner of a mark changes as a result of lawful transfer of the mark, a notarized statement of assignment must be filed with the assignment fee.
Before applying for a trade name a company must make sure that the name is available by searching Alabama Secretary of State Trade Name, Trademark or Service Mark records. This process is similar to the first step in formation of a new company.
We can help you research the trade name of your choice, and prepare and file all the necessary trade name registration paperwork with Alabama Secretary of State – all you need to do is complete our simple application below.
