When I form an LLC in Virginia, do I also have to file for a federal tax number?

In most cases when forming a new company one would need to obtain a federal tax ID (EIN). Some rare cases when one is not needed is if your LLC is a single-member LLC, with no employees, and you having an SSN which you would use as the tax ID of the company.
